On the Separation of Drawing and Painting
What I find interesting in Toby’s work is his physical merger of the painted and drawn surfaces. In my recent posts, Toby has imbedded drawings underneath paintings—offering a quality of aesthetic elegance through the complete fusion of these two processes. Thinking through the rhetoric of painting and drawing, I find Toby’s recent work to be pushing the boundaries of what can be considered one without the other.
